Chickpeas or Turkish peas is an annual, pod-like plant whose grains have an unusual shape resembling a ram's head with a bird's beak. The chickpeas are considered to be from Central Asia. It is believed that chickpeas were known and used by people as food long before our era. For example, chickpeas were found in Greece, which are at least 7.5 thousand years old, and in Iraq chickpea seeds dating back to the Bronze Age have been preserved. In ancient times, chickpeas were often used not only as food, but also as medicine.
Chickpea sprouts contain high-quality proteins and fats, fiber, large amounts of calcium, as well as magnesium, potassium, vitamins A and C. Modern scientists have discovered that people have always valued this type of legume for some reason.
Dioscorides Pedanius, one of the famous doctors of the time of Emperor Nero, reported that the tender young grains of chickpeas are beneficial to the stomach and recommended their use for dessert. Hippocrates recommended chickpeas as part of a proper diet for skin diseases.
Chickpea grain contains up to 30% of protein, close in quality to egg protein, up to 8% of oil, 50-60% of carbohydrates, 2-5% of minerals, many vitamins: A, B1, B2, BZ, C, B6, PP. Due to the high nutritional value, you can eat peas instead of meat, as many people do during Lent.
Such a diet serves as a prevention of heart and vascular diseases. Thanks to their high fiber content, chickpeas improve digestion, have a beneficial effect on heart function, and also regulate blood sugar levels.
