Corn is of great economic importance as a fodder, food and technical crop. It is grown primarily for grain, which is rich in carbohydrates and fats, as well as for silage. Corn is native to the Americas; its botanical origins are not precisely established. Corn doesn’t have any wild ancestor in nature. It is grown in most countries of the world. Corn is a high yielding crop. On the average 32-37 centners of corn per hectare are yielded in the country. Under artificial irrigation, yields are 100 cwt/ha and even more.
According to the modern classification corn is divided into 8 species or groups.Five of them are of production importance, such as tooth-like, siliceous, starchy,
bursting and sugar-like corn.
